When people think about Philips, many may immediately associate the brand with electric shavers, home appliances, and consumer electronics. However, Philips has also created several highly respected audio products over the years.
As someone who enjoys exploring different headphones, I have always been curious about the Philips SHP9500. This headphone has gained a reputation among audio enthusiasts as a “legendary budget Hi-Fi headphone” because of its impressive sound quality, comfort, and open-back design.
But does it really deserve all the praise?
After spending time listening to music, watching movies, and gaming with the Philips SHP9500, here is my experience.

Packaging and Accessories
The packaging of the Philips SHP9500 immediately gives a professional impression.
The box is large and simple, with a clean industrial design. The front and back showcase the headphone itself, while the sides highlight specifications and features. However, the full-English description may not be very practical for every user.
Inside the box, the headphone is securely placed in a protective mold. The included accessories are simple but useful:
3-meter detachable audio cable
3.5mm to 6.3mm gold-plated adapter
Storage pouch
Unlike many modern headphones that focus on unnecessary accessories, Philips provides exactly what this type of Hi-Fi headphone needs. The 3-meter cable is especially useful for desktop setups, amplifiers, and home listening environments.
Design and Build Quality

The Philips SHP9500 follows a classic professional audio design philosophy. The entire headphone uses a black color scheme with a simple and understated appearance.
At first glance, it may not look as flashy as modern gaming headsets with RGB lighting or aggressive designs. However, that is exactly what makes it attractive. The SHP9500 has a timeless studio-monitor style that feels more like professional audio equipment than a consumer gadget.
The build quality is surprisingly solid. Although most of the body uses plastic instead of metal, the matte finish feels refined, the construction is sturdy, and the overall assembly is clean.
The adjustable steel headband improves durability while maintaining flexibility. The suspension-style design distributes pressure evenly, making the headphones comfortable for different head sizes.
Comfort: One of the SHP9500’s Biggest Strengths
For me, comfort is one of the most impressive parts of the Philips SHP9500.
Many people assume that large over-ear headphones must feel heavy or uncomfortable, but the SHP9500 proves otherwise.
The headphones weigh around 298 grams, which is relatively lightweight for a full-size open-back headphone. During long listening sessions, I barely noticed the weight.
The large ear cushions use soft memory foam with breathable fabric material. Compared with artificial leather pads, the fabric design reduces heat buildup and sweating, making it much more comfortable for extended use.
The ear cups are also angled slightly at around 15 degrees, allowing them to better match the natural shape of the ears. This small ergonomic detail helps reduce pressure points and improves overall comfort.
For people who spend several hours listening to music, editing audio, or gaming, this level of comfort is a major advantage.
Open-Back Design: Wide Soundstage With Natural Audio
The most important feature of the Philips SHP9500 is its open-back acoustic design.
Unlike closed-back headphones that isolate sound inside the ear cups, open-back headphones allow sound to move more freely. This creates a more natural and spacious listening experience.
The metal mesh design on the outside of the ear cups improves airflow and helps reduce the “closed-in” feeling that some headphones produce.
The result is a wider soundstage, better instrument separation, and a more realistic sense of space.
Of course, open-back headphones also have limitations:
Almost no noise isolation
Sound leakage is noticeable
Not suitable for noisy public environments
The SHP9500 is best used in quiet places such as home, a private office, or a personal studio.

Sound Quality: The Reason Why People Still Love It
The Philips SHP9500 uses 50mm neodymium drivers, which provide excellent detail reproduction and a relaxed, natural sound signature.
The first thing I noticed was the impressive soundstage. Music feels more open, and instruments have clearer positioning compared with many closed-back headphones in the same price range.
Bass
The bass is not overly boosted, but it has good depth and control. It feels powerful when needed while maintaining a clean and accurate
Midrange
The midrange is where the SHP9500 performs especially well.
Vocals sound clear and natural. Female vocals have excellent transparency, while male vocals feel rich and warm. The headphone does a great job presenting the emotion and texture of voices.
Treble
High frequencies are bright and detailed without becoming too aggressive. Instruments have good extension, and small details in recordings are easier to notice.
For listeners who enjoy pop, classical music, acoustic tracks, and live recordings, the SHP9500 offers an enjoyable and balanced experience.
Gaming Experience: Surprisingly Good for Competitive Players
Although it is not marketed as a gaming headset, the Philips SHP9500 performs extremely well for gaming.
The wide soundstage creates excellent spatial awareness. In FPS games, footsteps, environmental sounds, and weapon effects are easier to locate.
During gameplay, I found that:
Footstep direction was clearer
Distance perception was more accurate
Explosions had better layering
Different weapons sounded more distinct
Combined with the lightweight design, the SHP9500 is comfortable enough for long gaming sessions without creating pressure fatigue.
Final Thoughts
After using the Philips SHP9500, I understand why this headphone has maintained such a strong reputation among audio enthusiasts.
It does not try to compete with modern wireless headphones or gaming headsets filled with extra features. Instead, it focuses on what matters most for many headphone lovers: comfort, sound quality, and a natural listening experience.
The open-back design creates a wide and immersive soundstage, the lightweight construction makes long sessions comfortable, and the 50mm drivers deliver impressive detail and clarity.
At around $67.09, the Philips SHP9500 remains an excellent choice for anyone looking to experience Hi-Fi sound without spending a fortune.
If you mainly listen at home, enjoy music, play competitive games, or want to explore the world of open-back headphones, the SHP9500 is still a headphone worth considering.
