Mullvad VPN Review: A Privacy-Focused VPN That Keeps Things Simple

When most people choose a VPN, they usually look at three things:

Speed.

Price.

How many countries it supports.

But Mullvad VPN takes a different approach.

Instead of competing with other VPN providers by adding more features, more subscription tiers, or more complicated packages, Mullvad focuses on one simple idea:

Privacy should be simple.

Mullvad is a Swedish VPN service known for its strong privacy philosophy, anonymous account system, transparent pricing, and minimal approach to collecting user information.

It may not be the best VPN for everyone, but for users who care deeply about privacy, Mullvad is one of the most interesting choices available.

No Email Address Required

One of the first things that makes Mullvad different is the account system.

Most VPN services require you to create an account with an email address.

Mullvad does things differently.

When you create a Mullvad account, you receive a random account number. This number is your identity within the Mullvad system.

No username.

No email address.

No personal profile.

This design reflects Mullvad’s overall philosophy: collect as little user information as possible.

For privacy-focused users, this is one of Mullvad’s strongest advantages.

Simple Pricing Without Complicated Plans

Another thing I appreciate about Mullvad is its pricing model.

Many VPN companies use large discounts to encourage users to purchase one-, two-, or three-year subscriptions.

Mullvad takes a much simpler approach:

€5 per month.

The price is the same whether you use it for one month or multiple months. There are no complicated subscription tiers and no confusing feature differences between plans. (mullvad.net)

Personally, I think this is refreshing.

You know exactly what you are paying for.

There is no need to calculate whether a “special offer” is actually a good deal after the introductory period ends.

Privacy Is the Main Feature

Mullvad is not trying to convince users with dozens of extra tools.

Its main selling point is privacy.

The company states that it does not log:

• traffic activity
• DNS requests
• connection timestamps
• IP addresses connected to the VPN

Mullvad also publishes information about its security practices and has undergone independent security audits. (mullvad.net)

Of course, no VPN provider can make you completely invisible online.

A VPN can protect your connection and hide your IP address from websites you visit, but it cannot replace good online security habits.

Still, Mullvad’s minimal-data approach is one of the reasons many privacy enthusiasts trust it.

WireGuard Performance

Although Mullvad focuses heavily on privacy, performance is still important.

Mullvad supports modern VPN protocols including WireGuard and OpenVPN.

WireGuard has become popular because of its lightweight design and strong performance compared with older VPN protocols.

For everyday activities like browsing, messaging, and general internet use, Mullvad provides a smooth experience.

However, users looking specifically for streaming optimization or the largest possible server network may find other VPN providers more suitable.

Mullvad’s priority has always been privacy first.

A Simple App Without Unnecessary Features

Opening Mullvad feels different from many mainstream VPN apps.

There are no endless marketing banners or complicated upgrade recommendations.

The interface is clean:

Choose a server.

Connect.

Done.

You can select countries and cities, change VPN protocols, enable features like the kill switch, and manage connection settings.

For technically experienced users, there are enough settings to customize.

For beginners, the basic connection process is still simple.

What About Streaming and Entertainment?

This is where Mullvad is different from services like NordVPN or ExpressVPN.

Mullvad does not position itself as the ultimate streaming VPN.

Some users may successfully access certain streaming services, but it is not the main focus of the product.

If your main reason for buying a VPN is:

• watching content from different regions
• accessing streaming libraries
• optimizing entertainment connections

then a mainstream VPN may be a better choice.

Mullvad is designed for users who value privacy more than entertainment features.

Mullvad Compared With Other VPNs

After looking at several popular VPN services, the differences become clearer.

NordVPN

Better for users who want a complete VPN package with many security features.

Surfshark

Better for families or users with many devices.

Proton VPN

Better for users who want a privacy-focused service with a free option.

ExpressVPN

Better for users who want simplicity and an easy experience.

Mullvad

Better for users who want privacy, transparency, and a simple pricing model.

Who Should Choose Mullvad?

I think Mullvad is especially suitable for:

Privacy-focused users

People who care more about data collection policies than extra features will appreciate Mullvad’s approach.

Technical users

Users who enjoy controlling their network settings may prefer Mullvad’s straightforward design.

People who dislike subscriptions

The fixed monthly pricing removes the usual VPN subscription confusion.

Final Thoughts

Mullvad is not trying to be the biggest VPN company.

It does not compete through the largest server network, the most features, or the biggest marketing campaigns.

Instead, it focuses on one clear goal:

Create a VPN that collects as little information as possible and gives users more control over their privacy.

That approach will not appeal to everyone.

If you want streaming features, unlimited devices, or a beginner-friendly entertainment VPN, services like NordVPN, Surfshark, or ExpressVPN may be better choices.

But if privacy is your top priority, Mullvad is one of the few VPN services that truly builds its entire product around that idea.

Sometimes the best feature is not adding more.

Sometimes it is simply collecting less.
