Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 in 2026: A Major Health Upgrade, Two Very Different Buyers

Apple’s September 2026 event introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, and the headline is not design—it is sensing. Both watches look nearly identical to their predecessors, but underneath they share a new S11 chip and a redesigned Health Sensing System that Apple claims delivers the most accurate heart rate tracking in any wearable.

The New Health Sensing System

The centerpiece of this generation is the rebuilt sensor stack. Apple increased the electrode surface area for ECG readings and rearranged the optical photodiodes in a ring to capture light more efficiently. The practical result is that heart rate is now sampled every five seconds throughout the day, and heart-rate variability—a key indicator of stress and recovery—is measured up to 24 times more often than before.

This data feeds a new Readiness Score, rated 0 to 10, with four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, and Go For It. The Series 12 also gains a daytime Vitals view and separate recovery and overall HRV readings. Apple validated the system against leading wearables in a study of over 1,000 participants.

S11 Chip and Audio Intelligence

The S11 is Apple’s first new watch silicon since 2024, and it enables Audio Intelligence features arriving later this year. Live Rewind displays the previous 15 seconds of conversation as text. Siri Recap summarizes your day’s conversations. Sound Recognition alerts deaf and hard-of-hearing users to sirens, alarms, and doorbells. A hardware-isolated Secure Exclave processes microphone audio without recording or storing it.

Series 12 vs. Ultra 4: What You Actually Get

Both watches share the S11 chip, the full Health Sensing System, Readiness, and Audio Intelligence. The Ultra’s extra $400 buys durability and battery, not better everyday health tracking.

The Series 12 starts at $399 for aluminum and now offers a ceramic finish for the first time since 2019, at $899. Battery life remains 24 hours, but outdoor workout tracking rises to 10 hours and 15 minutes of charging adds 12 hours.

The Ultra 4 starts at $799 with 50 hours of everyday battery, 84 hours in Low Power Mode, and 45 hours in Max Extended Workout Mode. It adds 100m water resistance, a 3,000-nit display, dual speakers, satellite messaging, and a 86-decibel siren.

The Bottom Line

For most buyers, the Series 12 is the smarter choice. It delivers the same core health sensing, the same chip, and the same AI features for half the price. The Ultra 4 remains the right tool for divers, ultra-runners, and anyone who needs multi-day battery or satellite connectivity. If you own an Ultra 2 or older, or a Series 9 or older, the health sensing upgrade alone justifies the move. If you own a Series 10 or 11, the improvements are real but incremental—waiting another cycle is reasonable.
